Singapore’s competitive salary model may be extended to the retail industry.

Senior State Minister for Manpower Zaqy Mohamad declared that Singapore is considering a progressive wage model for the retail sector. The progressive wage model is a program aimed at rising the wages of low-wage workers by developing their skills and improving their productivity. In 2015, the scheme began. If included, under the progressive wage model, the retail sector will be the sixth.

It would include workers in supermarkets, grocery stores, and fashion retail stores, such as cashiers and salespeople, Mr. Zaqy said during a press briefing after speaking to workers at Jewel Changi Airport from a retail store. He is spearheading the tripartite lower-wage workgroup launched last October.
